THE SMALL SCHOOL FOR YOUR BUSY KIDS

Oak Meadow School Los Angeles, in Northridge, California, seeks to provide a caring academic environment in which young people are nurtured and challenged to achieve their highest potential both as students and as human beings. The school was established in 1994 specifically to meet the needs of students with a life passion. Many of their students have significant extra-curricular interests that consume a great deal of their time, and need a school setting which will allow them to prepare for college and pursue their dream. From athletics to artistic endeavors or employment, our students are busy kids!

Students are also attracted to Oak Meadow School because the traditional classroom setting does not allow them the opportunity to progress academically at an individually satisfying pace. We have had students graduate from our high school, for example, at age 16 and get accepted at UC Berkeley. We have had other students who have struggled in the traditional setting because of the distractions of a huge and impersonal environment, but who have tremendous academic potential that has gone unnoticed and untapped.

At the Middle School level, a maximum of fifteen students from grades 5-8 work in a "one-room schoolhouse" environment under the care of a teacher, who guides the students to research (using books or a fully networked computer lab), to work in small groups, to help each other, or to get help from another student. Older or advanced students help younger or less advanced students. The teacher works with students who need one-on-one help. The curriculum is designed to be used independently without the teacher's instruction in front of the entire class. The goal of the middle school years is to prepare students for a college preparatory high school. Middle school students are not typically quite as busy as high schoolers, and they also need more daily attention: they are in class Monday through Thursday, finishing work as needed at home.

The High School teaches the entire core high school curriculum on one day each week. Normally lower division students (9th and 10th grades) also attend on Mondays (for individual sessions with teachers), and Wednesdays and Thursdays in a study group environment where help and guidance is given in all subjects. Upper division high school students tend to be much busier and much more independent learners, and attend on the teaching day, and other days as needed.

The 2008-09 school year will be our fifteenth year. Our graduates have gone on to graduate from such schools as UCLA, UC Davis, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (School of Business), UC Santa Cruz, many Cal State Universities, and private schools all over the nation. In addition, our grads have gone on to such institutions as the Berklee College of Music, the Fashion Institute of Design and Manufacturing, and the Brooks Institute of Photography.

Oak Meadow School is accredited by CITA, the Commission on International and Transregional Accreditation, which is recognized by the major regional accrediting agencies (like the Western Association of Schools and Colleges). A link to CITA is available on the school website.
